as you can tell by the picture above, this didn’t go the way vegas fans hoped it would. the 2018 stanley cup now belongs to the washington capitals. as painful as this is, lets take a quick look at some highlights… believe me, i’ll make this quick… no one likes to dwell on bad memories.
completely scoreless… quick enough?
this period had all vgk fans on the edge of their seats as we went back and forth with goals scored. with 13:36 left, jakub vrana on a break away finds the back of the net and scores the first goal of the game. the golden knights were quick to answer back as nate schmidt sent a rocket pass to jonathan marchessault and finds the skate of matt niskanen which finds the back of the net and ties the game 1-1. just 34 seconds later, the one and only alexander ovechkin sends a one timer past marc-andre fleury and gives the capitals a 2-1 lead. once again, the golden knights were able to answer back in just over two minutes when cody eakin sends a beautiful pass to tomas tatar who sends a backhand into the net and ties the game up 2-2. as the clock was starting to wind down, the golden knights knew they had to go into the final period with the lead if they had any chance to advance. with just 28 seconds left, alex tuch sends a quick pass to reilly smith who capitalizes on a wide open net and gives the knights a 3-2 lead ending the second period.
this period showed who truly wanted it more… after 10 minutes of play, devante smith-pelly ties the game 3-3 with a diving backhand shot that gets past marc-andre fleury. just three minutes later, lars eller scoops up a puck that made it between the legs of fleury and buries the game winning goal.
with the 2018 season behind us, the washington capitals officially take home the stanley cup…..this is the first stanley cup victory in the franchises 44 years of existence. however, the golden knights get the opportunity to have first round draft picks for the 2019 season and will come back even better than ever. they have broken every inaugural season record in nhl history and have united the vegas valley and its locals. even though the knights weren’t able to raise the stanley cup, they were able to raise a city in a time of need. GO KNIGHTS GO!!!!!
