i know for las vegas, these last few games have been hard to watch however, let me make one thing clear… regardless if we win or lose, this is our team! and no matter what happens, our city will always stand behind a team that has united our city in a time of tragedy and need. there are three games left in the series and two of those games are on our home ice. another little fact, the washington capitals have the worst record in stanley cup history when ahead 3-1. we are vegas strong! and there is no way we will allow any team but ours, hold that stanley cup trophy above their heads!
it’s safe to say that the player of the game was definitely the washington capitals goal post. there were a lot of missed opportunities due to the amazing goal keeping of that red iron post. for example, in just one minute into the game, alex tuch sends a rocket toward braden holtby and dings one off the post. just three minutes later, erik haula sends a beautiful pass to james neal who on a wide open net, hits the post once again. now this is where things took a violent turn. with ten minutes left in the first period, t.j. oshie takes a rebound off marc-andre fleury and places it top shelf, scoring the first goal of the game and giving the capitals a 1-0 lead. seven minutes later, tom wilson sends another puck top shelf off a one timer and extends the lead 2-0. it’s not over yet, with only 20 seconds left, we have one more top shelf goal by devante smith-pelly and the capitals have a 3-0 lead heading into the second period.
the golden knights definitely picked up their defensive play in this period. the first nine minutes were both teams going back and forth getting shots on net, taking big hits and skating like the wind. with 11:30 left in the second, mr. iron post came to the rescue once again when brayden macnabb sent a rocket from center ice and filled the arena with that gut wrenching “ding” sound. after another seven minutes, john carlson hits the spot of the night, top shelf, and the capitals officially have a 4-0 lead heading into the third period.
the golden knights finally got some relief in this period after 6 minutes of play when erik haula sends a pass to james neal in front of the net and scores the knights first goal of the game off a fantastic roof shot. another seven quick minutes went by and off a long pass from jonathan marchessault, reilly smith finds the back of the net and tightens the score to 4-2. at this point you think we have a game, but that changed quickly when just one minute later, michal kempny finds himself in front of a wide open net and scores the fifth goal of the game for the capitals. once again, it doesn’t end there. with just one minute left of play in the final period of game four, brett connolly sends a quick wrist shot towards fleury while in front of the net and ends the game with a 6-2 victory for washington.
as stated in the introduction to this heartbreak of a recap, there is plenty of series left and this is when our beloved golden knights play their best. they have rallied a city all season long and brought absolute joy to thousands during their run to the stanley cup. we have two of the last three games in on our turf and we will chant victory is ours as we hold that stanley cup above our heads!
