stanley cup final game 1

the golden knights have officially done what the world thought would never happen….play in the stanley cup final! this is one of the biggest and hardest trophies to get in professional sports and a team who is in their first season as a professional franchise is playing against a team that has 44 years in existence! one thing you’ll notice about this entire blog is that the whole thing has #nocaps.

1st period:

both teams have never had the opportunity to play in the stanley cup final, so you can count on one thing during the first 20 minutes… hard hits, fast skating and a barrage of goals. with 12:45 left and the golden knights on a power play, colin miller sends a rocket of a slap shot towards to net and scores the first stanley cup goal of the season! within seven minutes, the washington capitals answered back when brett connolly redirects the puck between his legs and past marc-andre fleury and ties the game 1-1. in less than a minute, t.j oshie wraps around the net and sends the puck towards nicklas backstrom who finds the back of the net giving washington a 2-1 lead. there was no way the golden knights were going into the second period trailing by one point. with just 1:41 left in the first, william “wild bill” karlsson stuffs one in the net off a rebound and ties the game 2-2!

2nd period:

this period was a little slower than the first but exciting none the less. just a few minutes in and 16:39 left in the period, reilly smith gets a one timer pass from deryk engelland and finds the back of a wide open net giving the knights a one goal lead! within five minutes, the capitals answered back with their own wide open goal when t.j oshie fed john carlson in front of the net catching our beloved fleury with his pants down. with the game now tied 3-3, the second period comes to an end and we head into the final period of the game.

3rd period:

now this period things started to really heat up as both teams knew that the team who wins game one typically has an 80% chance of winning the series. within the first two minutes of the period, tom wilson deflects a shot and sends the puck under marc-andre fleury who loses sight and kicks it to the back of the net with his own skate. the golden knights were not happy the capitals now had a one goal lead and wasted no time closing the gap as reaves cross checks carlson to the ice and sends the puck top shelf tying the game 4-4. at this point you can tell washington is getting frustrated when tom wilson decides to skate across the ice and deliver a nasty hit to johnathan marchessault who had his back turned. the golden knights knew how to answer back and that wasn’t with dirty hits or foul play. instead, we answered back by taking the lead in the final period of game when tomas nosek drills a one timer pass from deryk engelland and into the net. with 7 seconds left in game one of the stanley cup final, tomas nosek decided to pour salt on the wound and scores his second goal of the game on an empty net.

the golden knights are now up 1-0 on the series by defeating the capitals 6-4. with vegas on its feet, and history being created, you can count on one thing and one thing only… victory is ours!!
