So begins the Western Conference Final in Winnipeg! Winner of this series gets the opportunity to play for the hardest trophy to win in sports… The Stanley Cup!
This period was completely dominated by the Jets. The Golden Knights seemed to have some trouble trying to find their skates almost the entire 20 minutes as Winnipeg continued to make play after play and find the back of the net. Just one minute in, Scheifele sends a back pass to an absolute rocket that gets passed Marc-Andre Fleury and the Jets find their first goal. Only six minutes later, Laine gets sent a one timer and finds himself in front of a wide open net giving the Jets a two goal lead. The Golden Knights didn’t even have time to register what happened before a pass in front of the net bounces off a skate and gives the Winnipeg Jets a 3-0 lead in the first. With a little frustration, Ryan Reaves drills Wheeler with a beautiful hit landing him in the Golden Knights bench. With the momentum of the big hit, the Golden Knights finally find their first goal with 11 minutes left when Brayden Mcnabb finds the back of the net off a one timer.
It only took 10 minutes into this period for the Jets to answer back. Wheeler sends a beautiful pass to Byfuglien who gets one passed Fleury and for the second time, the Jets find themselves with a three point lead. After six more minutes, Jonathan Marchessault send a quick pass in front of the net to William Karlsson who with so much grace, sends a quick backhand into the net.
The Golden Knights did what they could to try and close the gap but just couldn’t keep up with the bigger, faster players on the Winnipeg Jets. After a scoreless period on both ends of the ice, the Jets lead the series 1-0.
